DeepMind, an AI research company owned by Google, has developed a new AI system that uses reinforcement learning to discover improved computer science algorithms. In a paper published in Nature, DeepMind's new system, called AlphaDev, details how it discovered a faster sorting algorithm, which is already in use across industries from cloud computing and online shopping to supply chain management. The system has also been applied to one of the most commonly used algorithms for hashing in data structures to try and discover a faster algorithm, and improvements of up to 30% have been made. AlphaDev has shown its ability to generalise and discover new algorithms with real-world impact, and has demonstrated its potential to optimise algorithms to create a more powerful and sustainable computing ecosystem.
